About
Learn to read the Petit Etteilla exactly how Etteilla intended. In the late 1700s, Jean-Baptiste Alliette, known by his pseudonym Etteilla, published a complete system of divination with playing cards introducing upright and reversed card meanings and spreads that shaped cartomancy and tarot as we know them today. His work has never been available in English until now. I translated his books into English for the first time and created a historically accurate reproduction of Etteilla's 33-card deck. But translating a 250-year-old text doesn't automatically make it easy to understand. Etteilla wrote in his own dense style for an 18th-century audience, and a direct translation, while accurate, can still be hard to follow cold. That's what this course is for. Nobody has taught this system quite this way before, because it's never been accessible, and almost nobody has studied some of his methods closely enough to actually teach them. We'll go through his whole book and I'll break it all down in depth in plain English: his vocabulary, the various card significations, how cards combine, how to calculate timing and ages, and how he read real spreads for real clients. This system came before Etteilla's later, better-known tarot, but many of its principles can carry over into that later work. Even though we won't cover his tarot system here, this course can help you build a real foundation for reading his tarot as well. By the end, you'll be able to lay out full spreads (all of them!) & read them the way Etteilla taught his own students. Recommended alongside this course: A notebook for taking notes & the English language Petit Etteilla deck and translated book — best value is the set including large format charts of all of the spreads. Available in my shop. No experience needed. Already read tarot? You'll find this refreshingly different — a separate tradition, not a variation on what you know. Ready to learn to read the cards the way Etteilla taught them? Let's go!
